On Saturday, Owensboro businessman and community leader Malcolm Bryant will receive the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Shawnee Trails Council Boy Scouts of America.

It's been nine years since the council has recognized someone for contributions made to Scouting and community service. Former U.S. Sen. Wendell Ford was the last recipient of the Shawnee council's citizen award.

Presidents, congressmen sports figures and governors across the country have received the Distinguished Citizen Award including Ronald Reagan, John Glenn, Robert Gates, Bobby Jindal, Jack Nicklaus and director Stephen Spielberg.

Leigha Taylor, senior district executive of the Riverbend District of the Shawnee Council, said that no one else was even considered in discussions about who would receive the award.

"He has done so much for Scouts, not to mention what he has done for the community," Taylor said.

Bryant has been a Scout leader and has served on the executive board.

The award, given by councils throughout America, is presented to people who have demonstrated integrity and genuine concern for others in their professional and personal lives, Taylor said.

Several of Bryant's friends will speak at the reception and dinner, which begins at 7 p.m. at Mitch McConnell Plaza.

Rodney Berry said he'll be saying a few words. "I'm happy to participate," Berry said. "I think Malcolm has produced more Eagle Scouts from his troop than anyone else. He's a dedicated leader."

Bryant was chosen for his dedication to scouting, church and professional ethics, said Jeff Rock, executive director of the Shawnee Trails council.

"He's had a great impact on young people in other youth organizations and is very involved with his church," Rock said.

The evening is also a fundraiser for the Scouts. Proceeds from the event will go toward camp facilities, scholarships, leadership training and program materials.

Invitations have been sent, but if someone wants to attend they may call the Scout office at 314-6598.

A dinner buffet will be served by Niko's Italian Cuisine.
