*** Bryant: Downtown post office not closing *** Patrons of the Corporate Postal Store, 118 W. Fourth St., can breathe a little easier.
Malcolm Bryant, whose company owns the building, said he has "received confirmation from Mayor Ron Payne and (U.S. Rep) Brett Guthrie that our Owensboro downtown post office is not on the list to be closed."
Last month, postal officials said they were studying whether to close the downtown branch as a way to save money.
While the possible closing was being studied, clerks at the downtown branch were giving customers a list of telephone numbers of federal, state and local officials to call to try to save the office.
People who work in downtown offices said it's much easier to walk to the nearby branch than it is to drive to the main post office on U.S. 60 West.
The downtown office opened on Oct. 11, 1994, when Elvis Presley stamps were still a hot item and postage was 29 cents.
